What happened

The University of Maine unveiled BioHome3D on November 21, 2022. The 600-square-foot prototype used wood fibers and bio-resins in printed floors, walls and roof sections.

Developed with Oak Ridge National Laboratory through a Department of Energy-supported program, the project explored off-site manufacturing and modular assembly. MaineHousing and the Maine Technology Institute were also partners.

The university presented the structure as a research prototype addressing materials, labor and housing constraints. It did not demonstrate that every site or housing type could immediately achieve the same manufacturing economics.
