What happened

Velo3D announced that Mears Machine Corporation ordered a sixth Sapphire XC in October. The Indianapolis manufacturer intends to dedicate the new system to copper-nickel, adding a material family used in demanding fluid-handling environments.

Mears already operates five systems producing nickel-superalloy and aluminum parts, according to the announcement. A dedicated machine adds capacity without repeatedly switching the same equipment between those established materials and copper-nickel.

The companies identify shipyards and offshore industries among the intended markets. The news documents an equipment order and planned capability expansion; it does not establish qualification of every possible component or application.
