What happened

Prusa introduced Prusament PLA Lightweight, an actively foaming filament. Heat in the nozzle expands the material, allowing a given mass of filament to produce more printed volume.

The manufacturer reports weight reductions of up to 65% compared with regular PLA under suitable conditions. Suggested applications include RC aircraft, floating models and costume components.

Foaming also changes color, texture and extrusion behavior. The article describes temperature-dependent expansion and increased stringing, making material-specific profiles important. The headline weight reduction is a maximum claim, not a guarantee for every design.
