MIT demonstrates a multimaterial route to printed electric motors

A research platform combines functional materials instead of printing only a motor housing.

What happened

MIT’s February 18 report describes a multimaterial printing platform used to fabricate an electric linear motor in hours. The system handles conductive and magnetic materials alongside other printable materials.

Four extrusion tools support different material forms. The work aims to reduce the separate equipment and assembly steps associated with producing complex electric machines.

The demonstrated device is a research result. It does not mean a standard desktop printer can manufacture arbitrary replacement motors or that the process meets every industrial duty requirement.
