Second RepRap design
Mendel succeeded Darwin with a smaller footprint and revised Z-axis constraints. This record describes Ed Sells’s original Mendel rather than later Prusa or other derivatives.
What the performance numbers mean
The project page’s deposition result is a solid-PLA example. Its much higher listed XY motion limit is not sustained print speed, and positioning accuracy is not a general finished-part tolerance.
Introduced in 2009.
Introduced in summer 2009 according to the RepRap project.

What changed
- Reduced machine footprint
- Improved Z-axis constraint
- Simplified assembly
Read this with the specifications
Open design specifications describe the original Mendel; individual builder configurations can differ.
A larger nominal envelope does not establish better print quality. Fit depends on the configuration, usable area, supports, and orientation.
