RAMPT helped take printed rocket nozzles to a larger scale

NASA’s retrospective traces how collaboration with RPM Innovations advanced large metal deposition.

What happened

A February 2025 NASA Spinoff account describes the RAMPT program’s work with RPM Innovations on large rocket components. The collaboration refined laser-powder directed energy deposition and the NASA HR-1 alloy.

The project produced a large demonstrator nozzle and developed manufacturing knowledge for complex propulsion hardware. NASA reported weight, time and cost improvements for the program’s thrust-chamber work.

These are results attributed to a particular development program. They should not be read as guaranteed reductions for every part produced with directed energy deposition.
