What happened

Michigan Medicine announced a clinical trial in March 2025 studying bioresorbable printed splints for children with severe tracheobronchomalacia, a condition involving airway collapse. The study had opened in January.

The team planned to enroll 35 infants across an eight-year study, with devices produced by Materialise. The customized splints were designed to support the outside of the airway and gradually be absorbed by the body.

Earlier use had relied on case-by-case expanded access. The trial was intended to evaluate safety and efficacy; its opening was not a report of completed trial results or full FDA approval.
